Chapter 477 – Original Affinity
Chapter 477 – Original Affinity
After sitting in the training room for close to an hour and using up all the cores that were inside, Damion was staring at the options in the Magic System Shop. Should he purchase an increase in magic power? Getting to S Rank was important and it would certainly increase his and everyone else’s odds of survival.But should that be his only purchase? He could also increase his mana capacity as well as his mana regeneration. Damion had always put off buying upgrades from the Magic System since he was worried that doing so would make it harder for him to naturally advance or that the upgrades would become too expensive. Now he knew that, while the upgrades might hamper his natural abilities, there was a hard cap on the cost, though he was not sure if that hard cap also meant a hard cap on the amount of the increase.
‘System, once I reach the cap on the cost of purchasing magic power upgrades, will the amount of the upgrade be capped?”
{Affirmative.}
‘Does this apply to mana capacity and regeneration as well?’
{Affirmative.}
With that information in hand Damion took a few more moments to consider his choices. Ideally, he should push his magic power as high as he could. That should give him the greatest chance of success in the ruins. Of course, he also knew that more magic power was not always the solution. He had defeated opponents stronger than him numerous times. If he recklessly boosted his magic power would he fall prey to overconfidence?
‘System, how much magic power does each purchase get me once I reach the cost cap?’
{Once cap is reached each purchase will cost 100,000 credits and reward 100,000 magic power.}
‘That calculation is simply enough,’ Damion thought as he frowned as it also meant 1,000,000 credits for 1,000,000 magic power. If he wanted to reach SS Rank he would need 5,000,000 magic power, so once he reached S Rank, he would need another four million credits. Right now, he had a bit over eleven million credits for the Magic System Shop, he did not want to spend it all just on boosting his magic power.
“S Rank first,” Damion said allowed, forcing the worry about anything else out of his mind. “My next magic power purchase costs 33 credits, that should mean twenty purchases to reach the 100k max. But I only need a little over 100k magic power to reach S Rank, so I shouldn’t need to purchase too many. Guess it is time to find out.”
‘System, how many credits will it cost me to buy magic power upgrades until I am S Rank?’
{Calculating…}
*Ding*
{You must purchase fifteen upgrades at the cost of 28,974 credits to have sufficient magic power to be S Rank.}
‘The upgrades must slowly increase until a certain point and then exponentially increase,’ Damion thought as he realized fifteen purchases would put him at eighteen total and the twenty-fourth purchase would put him at the cap.
‘System, purchase fifteen increases to magic power.’
{Affirmative.}
{Increase Magic Power purchased fifteen times for 28,974 credits. Magic Power increased by 122,750.}
Raw power surged through Damion, and he felt like his entire body was being pushed through rushing water inside and out as his magic power soared. He could feel his vitality rise as well as his physical strength increase with his ascension. The feeling only lasted a few seconds and when it was over he could feel the overwhelming force he now controlled.

As he had learned previously, his physical stats would double with crossing into S Rank. This sudden increase to his strength and dexterity made Damion nervous to move around. He recalled how he had been when he bought potions to raise his abilities before, now they were doubling and he was afraid of accidentally breaking something with the slightest touch.
*Ding*
{Congratulations host on reaching S Rank. Due to you now possessing power near the peak of your world original affinity is unlocked.}
‘Original affinity?’ Damion suddenly asked, not sure what the Magic System was alluding to.
*Ding*
{Host can now use his original affinity, Mind, freely.}
‘System, why was I not given the ability to use my original affinity when I unlocked you at 18?’
{Host’s original affinity was determined to be dangerous to host so was hidden to avoid persecution and a replacement affinity was assigned. Now that host has sufficient power to protect himself, affinity is being unlocked.}
‘Why Ice?’ Damion asked the System.
{To complete the task required, host needed an affinity with strong offensive and defensive capabilities to ensure survival.}
‘Well, could have been worse,’ Damion mentally shrugged.
The Mind affinity, Damion knew, was considered taboo. Mage Teft had even warned him not to accidentally acquire it. If he had been tested as a kid to possess the Mind affinity there was a good chance he would have been killed or forbidden from training his magic abilities.
‘The dreams,’ Damion suddenly put the pieces together. When the Magic System had been offline for upgrades he had been able to reach out with his mind through his dreams and speak with his sister and Elicia. Without the System’s suppression, it seemed he was able to unconsciously make use of his natural affinity. The question was, how strong was this affinity?
‘System, status.’

Damion carefully looked over his changed abilities. SS Rank Mind affinity was nothing to sneer at, though he had to wonder if that would have helped him avoid the usual repercussions of the taboo or made his fate certain. Still, seeing that his natural affinity being above S Rank made him happy, though it did confirm for him that the Magic System had artificially given him his EX Rank Ice affinity.
For a brief moment Damion considered spending the 200,000 credits it would cost him to raise his Mind affinity to EX Rank. However, in the end he decided against it. He had no spells for his new affinity and even if he did, he was not sure if he wanted to use them.
Thankfully, with several other affinities already at EX Rank and A Rank, he doubted anyone would notice the addition of the Mind affinity in his aura. Though, he suspected if they did they would not realize what the aura was, after all, as far as he knew, no one had met a Mind mage in living memory.
Since he was not going to make any other upgrades, Damion began to move around the workshop he was in. First he had to get used to just walking. Once he was standing, he carefully took a single step. Despite deliberately moving slowly, he felt his movements were unnaturally fast and it took him several laps around the room before he began feeling accustomed to just walking.
After walking came moving his arms and legs around. He did not dare to throw a punch or try a kick until he was comfortable and confident he was not going to accidentally break a wall. When he finally felt acclimated, Damion opened the door to the workshop and found Mage Teft standing guard over his workspace.
“I didn’t think it possible,” Mage Teft said as her senses told her that he had advanced.
“Neither did I,” Damion smiled. “Perhaps what Mage Harris did was still having a lingering effect and I just needed time for it fully integrate.”
“Perhaps. Well, now that you are done training for the moment, take this spatial artifact. It has cores and artifacts that people are requesting to upgrade. Since you have reached S Rank, I will spread the word to bring S Rank cores and artifacts as well now. How long do you think it will take to optimize these?”
Damion pretended to look inside the spatial artifact when in reality he was wondering how long it would take him to finish acclimating to his new powers. Sure, he was able to open a door and walk around a room without ripping the door off its hinges or crashing through a wall, but there was more to life than simple motor skills.
“Maybe a couple of days,” Damion told her. “But if a good plan is formulated, don’t hesitate to interrupt me, we don’t want to miss an opportunity.”
Mage Teft nodded and Damion retreated into the room to begin upgrading artifacts and see what other upgrades he could now splurge on.
