Chapter 31 Heading to the Sheepfold
Chapter 31 Heading to the Sheepfold
The light from the campfire seeped in through the cracks in the window.
Laughter drifted from afar, and Sarah stood by the window, biting her lip.
She wasn't upset about not being able to attend the party; what really bothered her was the group of brightly dressed girls who had just passed by.
"Look at my outfit today, Luo Xu will definitely be captivated by me."
The person who spoke was wearing a dress with an extremely low neckline, so daring that Sarah's heart skipped a beat.
A strange feeling welled up inside her, and she wished she could rush out the door immediately and keep a close watch on Luo Xu.
But then she thought that she was being too nosy, since she and Luo Xu were not yet lovers.
She stood there, conflicted, hoping that Luo Xu would reject all the girls who showed interest in him tonight.
Footsteps suddenly echoed in the corridor.
Sarah turned her head and quickly took a dagger from the drawer of the dressing table.
The footsteps stopped outside the door, and Luo Xu's voice came in.
"Sarah, are you there?"
Before she finished speaking, Sarah had already thrown away the dagger. Leaning on her cane, she walked a few steps to the door.
The door was suddenly pulled open, and Luo Xu stood in the doorway.
Sara loosened her crutches and threw herself into his arms.
"Why are you back?" Her voice was a little hoarse, as if she had something stuck in her chest.
"I'm worried about you." Luo Xu hugged her tighter.
Sarah shuddered in Luo Xu's arms and said softly, "Didn't any girls ask you to dance tonight?"
She lowered her head and began to secretly sniff Luo Xu's clothes with the tip of her nose.
He didn't smell of any other woman, only a faint smoky scent.
"Yes, but I rejected them all." Luo Xu reached out and stroked Sarah's hair, his answer simple and clear.
Sarah looked up, a smile playing on her lips, and tears welled in her eyes. She closed her eyes and slowly rose onto her left tiptoe.
Sarah's lips drew closer, her eyelashes trembling violently, as if she were using all her courage in this gesture.
One heart, pounding like a drum, ignited another.
Luo Xu's mind went blank as he watched the pink lips getting closer and closer, and a sudden impulse surged within him.
Although he said this morning that "we've only known each other for a short time," he couldn't control himself at this moment.
Luo Xu lowered his head and went to meet him.
Their lips touched, and although it was only for a brief moment, they could both feel each other's heartbeat skip a beat for that instant.
Luo Xu picked Sarah up, sat down on the edge of the bed, and then placed her on his lap, pulling her into his arms.
"When are we going to buy sheep?" Sarah buried her face in the crook of his neck, her face flushed red.
"Let's go tomorrow."
"Tell me again about your raid on the bandit camp."
"it is good."
The light of the campfire outside the window gradually dimmed, and the laughter faded into the distance. Galon and his wife should be back soon.
"I want to sleep," Sarah said, her voice muffled with her eyes closed.
Luo Xu gently placed her on the pillow and pulled the blanket over her.
Sarah looked at him, her deep green eyes filled with a complex expression.
Reluctance, and a little bit of prayer.
Luo Xu bent down and gently placed his lips on her forehead.
"I like you." His voice was soft, yet sweeter than any sweet nothing. "Goodnight."
"Goodnight." Sarah grinned and closed her eyes.
Luo Xu straightened up and gently closed the door.
He returned to his room and began packing his things.
The blood on the iron sword and dagger had been wiped clean, and the blades were polished to a shine.
Luo Xu neatly arranged the weapons on the table, then stuffed his coarse cloth clothes into his bundle.
After checking to make sure nothing was missed, he lay down on the bed and quickly fell asleep.
Nothing happened that night.
the next day.
Luo Xu got up early, and after a quick wash, he began to pack his weapons.
The iron sword was already hanging at his waist, and he was just picking up his bundle when there was a knock at the door.
"Luo Xu, are you awake?"
"I'm awake."
Rosula opened the door, and Sarah stood in the doorway, leaning on her cane.
She was dressed neatly, her hair was combed perfectly, and her lips curled up when she saw him.
Sarah suddenly noticed the bundle in Luo Xu's hand, and her eyebrows furrowed slightly.
"Are you moving back?"
"Yes, my injury has healed, and I can no longer stay at your house."
Sarah's lips moved slightly, as if she wanted to say something but then swallowed it back.
She stepped aside, leaning on her cane, and said, "Breakfast is ready. After you eat, I'll go to the sheepfold with you."
"Okay." Luo Xu reached out and ruffled her chestnut hair.
After having breakfast downstairs, the two left the stone building and walked along the dirt path toward the sheepfold.
The laughter and joy of last night's gathering have faded from Lantas village, replaced by a heavy anticipation for the autumn harvest.
Several villagers were squatting in front of their houses sharpening their sickles, while in the distance, people had already begun harvesting wheat.
When the two arrived at the sheepfold, Eric was instructing several villagers who were helping him with their tasks.
Seeing Luo Xu coming from afar, he put down the fodder he was holding and went out to greet him.
"You're here? I've already picked out the sheep for you."
After saying that, he turned to Sarah, a fawning smile spreading across his face.
"Sarah, your foot isn't healed yet, why are you in the sheepfold? You should go back..."
"Let's go check on the sheep first," Luo Xu interrupted him, frowning.
Eric didn't notice the disgust in Sarah's eyes. He muttered something indignantly and turned to walk towards the sheepfold.
The sheepfold was large, built on an open space in the southeast of the village, with several small enclosures separated by a fence made of thick wooden stakes.
Luo Xu did a quick count and found that there were at least a hundred sheep.
He was still observing the layout of the sheepfold when, as he got closer, a strong, foul stench hit him.
The sheepfold was a muddy mess, with the sheep treading on the dung and mud, their wool matted into dirty, grayish-brown clumps on their lower abdomens.
Several sheep had obvious hoof problems and were walking unsteadily.
Upon seeing this, Luo Xu couldn't help but frown.
It seems like the concept of bacteria doesn't exist in this era; no wonder the sheepfold is so filthy.
You need to be more careful when choosing sheep yourself.
Sarah, who was standing to the side, seemed to have gotten used to the stench. She stared calmly at Eric, who was herding sheep.
Five half-grown sheep were driven out, each with a rope around its neck.
These sheep were quite robust, with thick wool that gleamed healthily in the morning light.
"These are all good sheep, look." Eric held the rope and then wiped the dung and mud off his fingers on his clothes.
Luo Xu squatted down and checked them one by one.
The hooves were fine, there were no scabs on the ears, and the exposed skin was clean; he couldn't see anything unusual.
"Okay, I'll go right away." Eric smiled, a barely perceptible glint in his eyes.
"Wait a minute!" Sarah, leaning on her cane, stepped forward and glared at Eric.
Eric's heart skipped a beat, and he knew he was in trouble.
