Chapter 20 Sarah's Comfort
Chapter 20 Sarah's Comfort
A night breeze blew by, bringing a touch of coolness.
Luo Xu walked along the dirt road toward Jialong's house, his pace much slower than usual.
He carefully reviewed every detail of the raid plan again, and only breathed a sigh of relief after confirming that nothing had been overlooked.
A large cloud drifted in from the sky and completely covered the moon.
Luo Xu looked up at the sky, feeling uneasy.
Without moonlight, Speedy and his companions are very likely to get lost, and if they run into a band of robbers, they're doomed.
I should have participated in tonight's operation...
Before he knew it, Luo Xu had arrived at the door of Galon's house. He pushed open the door and went inside.
The oil lamps in the hall were still lit, and the long table was empty, indicating that dinner had been finished long ago.
Sarah sat alone at the table, a book open in front of her, but she was distracted.
Upon seeing Luo Xu enter, she immediately came over, leaning on her cane.
"Luo Xu, where did you go?"
"I...I went to Captain Walter to learn swordsmanship."
Under the light of the oil lamp, Luo Xu's face was covered in ash, and the sweat on his forehead was still wet.
Sarah stared at him for a while, gave an instruction to the butler, and then turned to him.
"There's still some food warming up in the kitchen, I've saved it for you. I've asked the housekeeper to prepare some hot water, you can wash up first."
"Thank you, Sarah."
"Alright, go ahead and go," Sarah said with a smile, urging him to go to the bathroom.
A servant carried a bucket of hot water into the bathroom and also prepared a set of clothes.
Luo Xu handed him the iron sword, then took off his clothes and lay down in the hot water.
My whole body was instantly enveloped in a warm feeling, and my tense muscles gradually relaxed.
My ribs feel slightly swollen, probably from the repeated stretching when I was swinging the sword today.
After an afternoon of training, Luo Xu was extremely exhausted.
He originally planned to wait for Feimaotui and the others at the village entrance after finishing his meal, but he was too exhausted and decided to rest properly.
If they're going to raid the bandit camp tomorrow, a good rest today will give him a stronger fighting ability.
After washing up, Luo Xu put on clean clothes and went into the hall.
Sarah was sitting at the table waiting for him.
"Bring up Rosu's dinner," Sarah ordered.
The housekeeper quickly came out of the kitchen with a tray and placed the food on the table.
A bowl of stew, a piece of dark bread, and a few pieces of cured meat, still steaming hot.
Luo Xu picked up his spoon and ate his dinner, while Sarah watched him from the side, resting her chin on her hand.
Dinner was quickly finished, and Luo Xu put the bowls and spoons into the tray.
"Luo Xu, I sense you're not in a good mood today," Sarah suddenly said, her tone very calm.
Luo Xu was stunned for a moment, his hand frozen in mid-air.
Actually, he's not a person who likes to confide in others; he prefers to keep everything to himself and process it on his own.
But looking into Sarah's deep green eyes, he unconsciously let out his anxiety.
Will the reconnaissance plan succeed? Will the raid be successful? What will happen to the village if it fails?
"I've been rehearsing the raid plan all day," Luo Xu said, putting down his spoon and rubbing his temples.
Sarah listened quietly, and only spoke after Luo Xu finished speaking.
"Luo Xu, I believe you can succeed." Sarah's deep green eyes reflected the light of the oil lamp.
Do you remember the night I was kidnapped by deserters?
"When they were stuffing me into the sack, I couldn't breathe and thought I was going to die. Then I heard the two deserters say—" She paused, "and I thought, if they want to do something bad to me, I'll bite my tongue and kill myself."
Luo Xu did not interrupt Sarah, but simply stared at her intently.
"I was in despair when you suddenly appeared and saved me."
Sarah talked a lot, but when she got to the bushes, she suddenly blushed and stammered.
"Luo Xu...you are not fighting alone. If you encounter difficulties, I will do everything I can to help you."
Sarah finished speaking, her blush still lingering.
"I feel much better, thank you." Luo Xu clenched his fist.
Although Sarah's words could not change the status quo, they made him realize that many people were relying on him.
Alina, Marcus, Leah... and Sarah in front of me.
Continuing to be anxious will only worsen your mindset, which will be detrimental to the upcoming raid plan.
"If you're still feeling anxious, I can go through your plan with you again." Sarah leaned closer, close enough for Luo Xu to smell a faint scent of roses.
Looking at the girl in front of him, he felt a strange sensation, which made him move closer involuntarily.
The two went over the raid plan again and again, and after confirming that there were no problems, they went up to the second floor together.
"Good night," Luo Xu said after a moment's hesitation, waving his hand.
"Goodnight." Sarah paused for a moment, then gave a sweet smile.
Luo Xu woke up just as dawn was breaking.
The pain in his ribs had completely disappeared. He tried to take a deep breath, and his chest felt clear.
Luo Xu immediately got up, picked up his iron sword, and ran quickly toward the village entrance.
From afar, you could see Walter standing at the entrance of the west village, his whole body covered in dew.
"Captain Walter, have Speedy and the others returned?"
"Not yet." Walter turned his head, his eyes bloodshot.
Luo Xu's heart skipped a beat, and he quickly changed the subject.
"Have you been standing here all night?"
"I can't sleep, waiting anywhere is just waiting," Walter said. "How's your injury?"
"I'm almost fully recovered." Luo Xu reached out and pressed his ribs, his face calm.
Walter didn't speak, he just stared in the direction where Speedy and his group had disappeared.
Luo Xu stood next to Walter and waited with him.
The distant horizon gradually brightened, and the edges of the wheat fields became clearer.
Suddenly, two figures appeared in the woods.
Luo Xu rubbed his eyes, and after confirming that it was Feimaotui and his group, he rushed out to meet them.
"Luo Xu, what are you doing?" Captain Walter's anxious voice rang out from behind.
Luo Xu then realized that he hadn't received any system enhancements and couldn't see them, so he hurriedly explained, "Feimaotui and the others are back."
Walter was startled and immediately followed Luo Xu's footsteps.
"Where is it?"
As the group drew closer, they finally saw each other clearly.
"team leader!"
Speedy walked in front, with another militiaman following behind. Their clothes were torn in several places by the bushes, and their trouser legs were covered in mud and grass clippings.
"Are you all alright?" Luo Xu asked.
"We got lost." Speedy took several breaths before speaking. "We followed that band of bandits north, but we lost them. There was no light at all last night, and we couldn't see anything in the forest. We wandered around for who knows how long before we had to find some bushes to hide in."
"We waited until dawn before we could see the way and find our way back."
"It's good to see you back." Walter looked at Speedy's face, covered in dust and mud, and patted him on the shoulder. "We'll change people tonight and go again."
"I'll go with you tonight," Luo Xu said.
The group returned to the village.
The three of them went to catch up on sleep and rest, while Luo Xu filled Walter's vacancy by standing guard at the west entrance of the village.
After Walter woke up, Luo Xu continued practicing his swordsmanship.
Time flew by, and in the blink of an eye, the sun had sunk below the horizon.
Luo Xu wiped the sweat from his face and opened the control panel.
"[Reconnaissance] 13, distance to next level: 21/217."
"【One-handed】5, distance to next level: 11/60."
With less than a day until the autumn harvest, we must succeed tonight.
