Chapter 446 The Future of Yesterday
Chapter 446 The Future of Yesterday
Chapter 446 The Future of the Past (Part 2)
Where did the collapse begin?
Peter couldn't say for sure either.
In summary, around 2013, Elephant Party Representative Katie gave a speech calling on Congress to pass a mutant registration bill that would require all mutants to register.
This bill naturally met with opposition from mutants. Mystique and her Brotherhood of Mutants then carried out an assassination plot against Senator Katie Holmes—who was later revealed to be possibly Magneto's Black Glove.
However, the death of a single senator did not quickly advance the event until terrorists known as the Ten Rings kidnapped and murdered the President of the United States, killing Tony Stark, Iron Man, in the process. Afterwards, the Vice President, who temporarily replaced Matthew Ellis, chose a completely different strategy, launching a large-scale war on terror against all terrorist organizations across the United States.
This naturally included the Brotherhood of Mutants. Under the guise of counterterrorism, the US government quickly passed a number of bills, effectively establishing surveillance laws for superhumans, and swiftly announced that Magneto and his nation Genosha were the masterminds behind the Brotherhood of Mutants, a terrorist organization.
Magneto awaited humanity's proactive attack on Kenosha. He did, but the outcome was not necessarily what he desired: with the support of the new president, AIM expanded its business scope across the board, and through a series of well-timed terrorist attacks and counter-terrorism operations, made its weapons the preferred choice of the US military. Subsequently, AIM acquired Trask Industries, the company that originally manufactured Sentinel robots.
Using AIM’s new super artificial intelligence hub to create a new generation of Sentinels, and taking the super robot “Super Adaptor” as a model, a new generation of Sentinels, “Nimrod”, was created.
Then came the Kenosha massacre.
With just three brand-new Sentinels, the entire island of Genosha was wiped out, killing over 15 million mutants. Magneto's prized magnetic force was utterly useless against Nimrod. Before he could even attempt to reverse Earth's magnetic field, Nimrod had completely destroyed Magneto with the Sentinels, which were completely unaffected by magnetism, and accomplished the maximum possible erasure of Genosha Island.
Katie was also present that day. The X-Men tried to help the mutants escape Nimrod's attack, but they accomplished nothing but more deaths.
Then, as expected, Nimrod spiraled out of control. This proved that humanity's control over a super AI was still far off. Nimrod's objective quickly shifted to the destruction and imprisonment of mutants and potential mutants worldwide. A small number of ordinary people were transformed into mechanical lifeforms to serve as guards in concentration camps for mutants. Many more ordinary people were simply eliminated due to the presence of X-gene mutations.
On the contrary, mutants who have awakened their abilities or existing superpowered individuals may be imprisoned.
The Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four all attempted to fight Nimrod. They established a defensive line in New York, but just three minutes into the battle, Nimrod launched a nuclear strike against New York, the city with the most superpowered individuals.
Thor, utterly disillusioned with humanity, left Earth. Hulk, having his gamma energy absorbed by the Sentinel robots by Nimrod and reverting to Bruce Banner, was annihilated by the ray. The X-Men suffered heavy casualties, and the entire Academy was almost completely wiped out. Cyclops lost an eye and only escaped with the White Queen's sacrifice.
As for the younger men, the captain didn't choose to send them to the front lines, which is why they survived.
"Sixteen years have passed since then, and we've lost many people. It wasn't until a few months ago that I woke up in the underground facilities of the academy ruins and learned all about it."
Charles Xavier had no idea what was happening in the world; he only knew that he had been dead for over twenty years, had awakened from a state of suspended animation, and then this scene unfolded. He tried to find his students using telepathy, but instead triggered Nimrod's senses. Fortunately, the legendary Endurance King Logan found him in time and took him away.
Nimrod seemed very interested in the telepaths, so much so that he ordered them to be captured alive rather than killed, which gave the two men a chance to escape.
"So, what's your plan, son?"
"I asked Katie to find a data storage device in the ruins of Baxter Building. It contains data about the Fantastic Four's time travel, which is what we need."
"So your plan is to do what that one-eyed guy did again, kill us all, and then gamble on a definite past?" Logan clearly didn't agree with Peter's plan. Although it's better to be dead than alive now, shouldn't there be a better way to commit suicide?
"No, I've discovered something new. In fact, since Cyclops' failed time travel, I've noticed a significant decrease in the Sentinel robots' pursuit. They're taking longer to detect our new hideout, and their reactions are worse. I've been thinking about why this is happening, and in the end, I only came up with one answer."
Peter handed the professor a stack of documents that Logan couldn't understand at all. After flipping through them, the professor looked surprised: "You mean... Nimrod, like the person Scott and the others sent, teleported himself there?"
"Moreover, Ninglu didn't just copy his program and send it back to the past; he directly controlled himself in the present, which consumed too much computing power, hence this situation."
Why did Nimrod send himself back to 2013? To ensure history proceeded correctly, and the world was destroyed as planned. The professor, upon hearing this, became grave and looked at Peter: "And then, what are your thoughts?"
"In the past, in 2013, before Tony Stark died, we were far stronger than we are now! Nimrod was weaker than he is now. We don't need to go back to the past; we just need to transfer someone's consciousness, even just their memories, into their past self. That would be enough to ensure that we can fight a severely weakened Nimrod simultaneously in two different timelines."
Peter grew increasingly excited as he spoke. This Spider-Man, already over thirty and with a stubble, finally offered his solution: "If we could gather all the survivors and simultaneously attack Nimrod, which has to handle the computational demands of two timelines, from both 2013 and 2029..."
"We can not only save our past, but even our present. That way, even if we alter history, the universe that was destroyed by Nimrod and thus diverged can be saved—but the risk is too great. If we fail, there will be no more possibility of fighting."
"You're overestimating the situation, Chuck. We weren't capable of fighting to begin with; this kid gave us an opportunity." Logan looked at the five people in the room, knowing that in 2029, they would likely be the only five left to fight Nimrod. "So, whose memories should we send back?"
"In reality, only one person meets the criteria."
After Peter finished speaking, he looked at Katie: "Only Katie is the best medium when she activates her power."
I've revised the last sentence of the previous chapter.
