Chapter 676: Who cares about naps!
Chapter 676: Who cares about naps!
Caspian watched from his terrace, his expression shifting from satisfaction to absolute, burning venom.
A human walking into Caeloria’s upper spires as if he belonged there. Walking with the Chosen One, practically glued to his side.
The intimacy of her positioning told Caspian everything about their relationship.
She was a half a step behind him, her eyes never leaving his face, the dark collar gleaming around her throat.
She looked at Jack like he’d hung the moon and stars. Like she would walk through fire for him.
Caspian’s hands gripped the marble railing so hard the stone cracked under the pressure.
The anonymous letter suddenly felt less like a lucky break and more like divine providence.
Someone wanted Jack Kaiser dead badly enough to purchase Bloodrush in massive quantities. Someone was willing to risk everything to see him eliminated.
And Caspian was going to help make it happen.
----------
Jack displayed no interest in the crystalline spires, nor did he acknowledge the aesthetic appeal or the political ramifications of his presence in Caeloria.
His gaze swept past the upper sector and locked on the lower districts. The roots of the city where blood essence would be harvested, where desperate people would be exploited, where the actual truth lived beneath comfortable lies.
"Faye," he said flatly, his voice carrying absolute certainty. "Take me to the lower districts. I want to see how the working-class elves live."
Faye’s face brightened impossibly, her entire expression transforming into euphoria. She thought he wanted to see her world, to understand her people better, to share in what she cared about. She had absolutely no idea that he was hunting.
"Of course!" she chirped, her bubbly voice carrying genuine joy as she took his hand and began to guide him downward through the city’s intricate geometry. "Oh, you’re going to love the lower districts! The people are so genuine, so kind, and the food is amazing! There’s this vendor named Meira who makes the best flatbread, and..."
--------
The transition was stark compared to the upper districts of Caeloria.
The polished marble and crystalline spires gave way to heavy stone architecture.
The streets narrowed, crowded with working-class elves going about their lives. These elves had no time for beauty.
Merchants called out prices from weathered stalls. Children played in narrow alleys between buildings. The smell shifted from expensive incense to bread, salt, sweat, and honest labor.
And then they saw him.
A human. Walking through their streets.
The reaction were mixed. Elves stopped mid-step. Conversations died mid-sentence. Every eye in the immediate vicinity turned toward Jack, their expressions shifting through surprise, curiosity, and awe in rapid succession.
But it wasn’t Jack who captured their hearts. It was Faye.
They recognized her immediately. Not just as beautiful, but as a Chosen One.
One of the nice ones. One who cared about the low-class districts. One who smiled at them as they mattered. And the way she walked beside Jack, the way her eyes never left his face, the way she trembled slightly whenever he spoke. It told them everything they needed to know.
This human was important. This human mattered to her.
Therefore, this human was worth respecting.
A little elf child, maybe five or six years old, ran toward Faye without hesitation, stopping just short of physical contact out of shyness.
"You’re the Chosen One!" the child said, her voice trembling with awe. "The nice one! I’ve seen you at the temple!"
Faye laughed, that bubbly sound that somehow made everyone in the street feel lighter, like the weight of their daily struggles had temporarily lifted. She knelt to the child’s level, her movements careful and gentle.
"I am! And I’m so happy to meet you! What’s your name?"
"Lira," the child said, then looked at Jack with shy curiosity. "Who’s that?"
"This is Jack," Faye said, and the way she said his name, with such tenderness and devotion, made every adult within earshot understand exactly what he was to her. "He’s... he’s very important to me."
Lira looked at Jack with new eyes. If the Chosen One loved him, then he must be worth loving.
"He’s big," Lira observed with the bluntness of childhood.
"He is," Faye agreed, squeezing Jack’s hand gently.
Word spread through the district like wildfire.
The Chosen One had brought a human to the lower districts. The Chosen One, who was kind and good and cared about them, had brought a human.
Merchants began calling out greetings to Faye, their respect evident in their voices. An elderly elf vendor, Meira, the one who made the flatbread, waved from her food stall, offering refreshment with genuine warmth.
A group of teenagers whispered excitedly to each other, watching Jack move so confidently through their streets and noting how he treated Faye.
By the time Jack and Faye had walked a full block, he’d been elevated from curious human to potential divine consort in the collective consciousness of the low-class districts.
{Wait. Hold on a second. Who is THAT?}
Oscar’s voice exploded in Jack’s mind with such force that he almost faltered mid-step.
{Because I’m experiencing something that feels suspiciously like my optical sensors are completely malfunctioning, but I’m pretty sure that’s actually a goddess walking next to us. I mean, look at her. The curves, the way she moves, the fact that she looks at you like you hung the moon and the stars personally, and she gets to walk in your shadow...}
’Oscar, you’re awake. I thought you’d be asleep for a lot longer. You take very long naps. What was this one? A week?’
{Naps!!! Who cares about naps! I’m just observing! From a purely technical standpoint! That’s a spectacular figure! And the collar around her neck, is that YOUR work? Did you forge that collar yourself? Because if you made that, I’m experiencing something dangerously close to being impressed by your craftsmanship! Also, she looks absolutely thrilled about wearing it!}
’She’s marked. That’s all you need to know.’
{Marked means owned, Jack! And she looks absolutely thrilled to be owned! You just casually acquired a goddess and didn’t even tell me about it?! What were you thinking?!}
Tharaxis’s presence was amused in that ancient, knowing way. The dragon had predicted Oscar’s reaction precisely. ’Your weapon has discovered your companionship.’
Emberion’s presence burned with aggressive approval. ’The choker is exquisite work. Did it bring her pain when you placed it?’
’No.’
’Pity. But then, she wouldn’t appreciate it anyway. She’s too enamored with you to register anything but joy.’
-----
Over the next five days, Jack moved through the lower districts like an apex predator mapping territory.
Faye was occupied with other tasks or sent away on errands, leaving Jack entirely alone to hunt.
Day one, he sat at Meira’s food stall and ordered flatbread and vegetables. While eating, he asked casual questions about supply chains. Where did the fine materials for the upper districts come from? Who organized the distribution networks? What routes did merchants use?
Meira, an older elf woman with kind eyes and weathered hands, answered freely. She was pleased to talk to someone interested in how the city actually worked.
Day two, Jack attended a market gathering and listened to gossip. A family discussing their missing son. A merchant complaining about recruitment gangs. An elder muttering about people vanishing without explanation.
